Admission Requirements
To be considered for admission to Carnegie Mellon, you must submit the following required items:
- Common Application
- $75 application fee*
- Official high school transcript**
- All required standardized testing official score reports, which includes SAT Subject Tests for most majors and the TOEFL or IELTS if English is not your native language
- Secondary School Counselor Evaluation
- Teacher Recommendation
- Common Application essay and personal statement
- All Fine Art applicants to the Schools of Art, Design, Drama and Music are required to arrange an audition or portfolio review. Applicants to the School of Architecture are strongly recommended to submit a portfolio.

ARCHITECTURE
The School of Architecture is seeking applicants to the Bachelor of Architecture (BArch) degree program with diverse backgrounds, interests and creative potential, as well as a distinct passion for the built environment. We look closely at students’ qualifications in the following areas:
- Strong Academic Record – Demonstrated through academic performance and curriculum, SAT Reasoning Test or ACT with Writing scores, and two SAT Subject Tests, including Math and either Physics or Chemistry.
- Creative Ability – Demonstrated by the submission of a portfolio of creative work, as well as other artistic endeavors based on creativity and systems thinking.
- Interpersonal and Leadership Skills – Demonstrated through the personal statement, extracurricular activities, letters of recommendation, service and the on-campus portfolio review.
A joint admission committee consisting of both the Office of Undergraduate Admission and the School of Architecture evaluates the qualifications of architecture candidates, including the qualifications noted above. The Office of Admission evaluates all required admission materials submitted as part of the admission application, and the School of Architecture evaluates each student’s creative ability and interpersonal and leadership skills through the submission of the required questionnaire, and possibly an electronic and/or on-campus portfolio review.

ARCHITECTURE Portfolio Review Submission
The architecture faculty are an integral part of the admission process in determining incoming classes. Submission of a portfolio is optional, but strongly recommended to be able to engage with the faculty involved in our admission process.* Applicants are also strongly encouraged to register for an on-campus review as a valuable supplement to the online portfolio submission. Applicants who participate in the On-Campus Portfolio Review will have a brief personal interview with a School of Architecture faculty member about their portfolio submission.
Applicants must submit their portfolios electronically through SlideRoom and choose between the following two options for review.
On Campus Portfolio Review
The School of Architecture strongly recommends that applicants visit campus for an on-campus portfolio review. As part of an on-campus review, you’ll come to campus to interview with architecture faculty about your previously submitted portfolio and receive an introduction to the school. You’ll be able to ask questions and engage with faculty, students and staff within the School of Architecture.
The School of Architecture requires an online portfolio submission, even if you plan to come to an On-Campus Portfolio Review. Visit SlideRoom to electronically submit your portfolio.
2013-14 On-Campus Portfolio Review Dates:
November 10 (Early Decision applicants only)

If participating in an On-Campus Portfolio Review:
- Early Decision applicants should attend the November portfolio review day (registering by November 1) and submit their portfolios electronically by November 1, 12:00 midnight EST.
- Regular Decision and Transfer applicants can attend either January portfolio review day (registering by January 1) and submit portfolios electronically by January 15, 12:00 midnight EST.
Online Portfolio Review
The School of Architecture provides an online portfolio review option for presenting your portfolio in lieu of visiting campus for an on-campus portfolio review. If you select this option, an admission committee of architecture faculty and students will review your portfolio online. Portfolios must be submitted online by November 1, 12:00 midnight EST for Early Decision applicants or January 15, 12:00 midnight EST for Regular Decision and Transfer applicants.

Portfolio Review Options
All applicants to the School of Art must submit a portfolio of creative work for review online, exclusively through the SlideRoom portfolio service.
In addition to the required online portfolio review, applicants may choose to visit campus for an optional interview and portfolio critique with School of Art faculty. A campus visit is an excellent opportunity to meet our professors and tour the campus, though it’s purely optional and doesn’t replace the required online portfolio submission.

Early Decision applicants should upload their portfolios by November 1, and Regular Decision applicants should upload their portfolios by January 15.

Please note: SlideRoom charges $12.00 to manage your portfolio for the School of Art. SlideRoom is a private company contracted by Carnegie Mellon to manage applicant portfolios; this money doesn’t go to Carnegie Mellon.
Optional On-Campus Interview and Portfolio Critique
Applicants have the option to bring their portfolio to campus to discuss it in an interview setting with a professor from the School of Art. Campus visits offer applicants the opportunity to attend information sessions, meet individually with art faculty and take a tour of School of Art facilities.(Applicants attending an on-campus interview and portfolio critique are still required to submit their portfolio online.)

Portfolio Review Submission
On-Campus Portfolio Review
On-campus reviews are highly recommended. If you select this option, you’ll visit Carnegie Mellon to review your previously submitted work, though you’re expected to bring actual samples of your work or design project (photos or video of large pieces that are difficult to transport is fine) with you as well. You can bring previously submitted work, a sketchbook or items that were not previously submitted online. Additionally, an on-campus review provides you the opportunity to speak directly with faculty in an interview, engage with students, sit in on available classes and tour the facilities.

Design Project
If you have limited work in your portfolio, the Design Project is an option to supplement that work. If you have no portfolio or creative work, the Design Project will satisfy the portfolio requirement. The Design Project can be located on the School of Design website. Applicants who select the Design Project as their portfolio can either submit the project online or bring it to campus if an on-campus review.
