Admissions:

1. Online Application Form.
2. Application Fee of $90 (non-refundable) for each application submitted.
3. Transcripts from all colleges and universities from which you have received credit (please note that transcripts must be scanned into the online application; official transcripts sent to the GSD are not accepted at the time of application). Transcripts not in English must be accompanied by a certified English translation.

6. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Scores, required of all applicants. When requesting that GRE or GMAT scores be sent to Harvard University, applicants should use the institution code for the Graduate School of Design (3455); a department code is not needed.

1. For International Students: Evidence of English Proficiency (TOEFL scores). Reporting codes for TOEFL scores are the same as those for the GRE. The minimum required TOEFL iBT total score is 92, with the following minimum section requirements: reading, 23, speaking 23, listening 23, writing 23. The preferred total TOEFL iBT score is 104 or above, with individual section scores of 26 or above. If TOEFL iBT is not available, you must take the paper-based TOEFL. Applicants must achieve a minimum total score of 577 and a minimum of 57 on each section. A score of 600 is preferred, with individual section scores.

 

Portfolio:

• Applicants must submit a portfolio that includes their most important and representative design work. All portfolios must be submitted online. Submission instructions can be found in the Instructions for Applying for Admission. Hardcopy portfolios will not be accepted.
• Portfolios should be formatted as follows:
  • One PDF file only – no separate JPG, TIFF, or PPT files.
  • Portfolios may be composed of no more than one separate PDF, 40MB maximum. Total pages submitted may not exceed thirty. Cover pages or table of contents do not count towards total pages.
  • Portfolios will be viewed by the Committee on a typical computer screen, so please format accordingly. Recommended sizes for page layouts are 12” x 18” or A3.
  • A maximum resolution of 150 dpi is recommended for all images appearing in the portfolio (or for the whole PDF file). RGB is the recommended format for color management on computer monitors.
  • When importing line drawings into PDF format, please check that line weights are properly reproduced or adjusted.
  • Text fonts should be legible when portfolio pages are viewed full-screen on a 15” monitor.
  • Applicants have the option of submitting one video as a supplement to the PDF portfolio. Videos should bbe in MOV or WMV format and no more than 60 seconds in length. Videos should be sized for 640 x 480 px. In exceptional cases where video has been a primary focus of an applicant’s previous design work, up to three video files may be submitted.

4. Personal Statement: In approximately 500 words, describe your background, your past work in your intended field of study, and your plans for graduate study and a professional career.
5. Transcripts in English: A transcript from each university attended and credit earned is required. All transcripts must be received by the application deadline.
   You may “upload” a scanned copy of your transcript or academic record to your online application prior to submitting the application. 
6. Uploading a scanned copy of your transcript or academic record
   – Please scan a current copy of your transcript at the lowest dpi that results in a legible document (we recommend to use under 200 dpi whenever possible).
   – You must ensure that the institution name and other identifying marks are not missed during the scanning process and that your scanned copy is clearly legible and can print on US Letter size paper (8 ½” x 11″)
   – You will want to ensure that you also include the transcript legend (back page in most cases).
   – You will want to be certain that your document is saved as a PDF file.
   – You will want to ensure that its size is less then 1000kb (1mb). Scanning in “gray scale” or black and white may produce the best results.
   – If the scanned file is too large then you may want to make a photocopy first (experiment with different settings until you find one that results in the smallest file size) then scan the photocopy. If the scanned file is too large and you cannot reduce the size while maintaining legibility, you may send a PDF file to mail_arch@columbia.edu

• All applicants whose native language is not English must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam. Information can be obtained by contacting TOEFL/ TSE Services, phone 1-877-863-3546 (inside US) or (609) 771-7100 (outside US) or by webwww.ets.org/toefl. A minimum TOEFL score of 600 on the paper-based test, 250 on the computer-based test or 100 on the internet-based test is required for admission. The institution code is 2164 and Dept. Code 12. International students who have successfully completed two years of study in an English-speaking institution may waive the TOEFL exam requirement provided they can submit relevant transcripts. The GSAPP does not accept the IELTS in lieu of the TOEFL exam.

 

Portfolio:

Portfolios must be postmarked by the application deadlines listed above. The GSAPP does not accept digital portfolios. ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN DESIGN – Applicants must submit examples of architectural design following the above format. Portfolios that do not conform to this format will not be accepted. • Transcripts: A transcript or academic record indicating degree earned or anticipated is required from each college or university attended and listed in the Academic Record section of the online application. • Applicants who have attended international institutions must submit transcripts or certified attestations of study. If such documents are not written in English, certified English translations are required. Once translated, the original transcript as well as the certified translation should be uploaded to the online application.
• Standardized examinations: All applicants, including international students, are required to take the General Test (verbal, quantitative, and analytical) of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Program of the Educational Testing Service. For information regarding this test, test dates and locations, and/or to arrange to take the test, visit www.ets.org/gre. Although the test may be taken at any time, it should be taken no later than the preceding December. On August 1, 2011, the Educational Testing Service (ETS) implemented the GRE revised General Test. For detailed information on this new test, visit www.ets.org/gre. ETS will provide the School with the ability to compare, on an equivalent basis, scores between the old and new tests. Therefore, applicants satisfied with results from tests taken prior to August 1, 2011, do not need to take the new test.
• The Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT) is required of all applicants whose native language is not English, regardless if the applicant’s prior education was at an institution where English was the primary language of instruction. For further information regarding the test and/or to arrange to take the test, visit www.toefl.org. The TOEFL must be taken by no later than the preceding December. Applicants are required to record their examination scores in the online application for each test date taken. Do not send hard copies. The Yale School of Architecture institution code number for the GRE and TOEFL iBT is 3985. Please note that this is different from other Yale University code numbers. Unless 3985 is used on the test form, applicants’ scores may not reach the School.
• Personal essay:An essay, not exceeding one page, that includes a brief personal history and reasons for applying is required and must be uploaded to the online application.
• Curriculum vitae: A curriculum vitae (résumé of academic and employment experience) is required and must be uploaded to the online application.
• Letters of recommendation: Three letters of recommendation are required and must be uploaded by each recommender by no later than January 2, 2014. At least one letter of recommendation should be from a person with direct knowledge of the applicant’s professional potential and academic ability.

 

Portfolio:

• A digital portfolio (a single pdf document optimized not to exceed 64mb) will need to be uploaded to the online application. The portfolio will be viewed on computer screens, so resolution above 150 dpi is not necessary. Pages of the pdf portfolio should be uploaded as spreads.
• The portfolio should be a well-edited representation of the applicant’s creative work. Portfolios may not contain videos. Anything submitted that is not entirely the applicant’s own work must be clearly identified as such.
• For the M.Arch. I program, the portfolio should demonstrate the applicant’s drawing skills and three-dimensional aptitude. Work represented may include drawings, paintings, sculpture, sketches, furniture and architectural designs, or other materials.
• For the M.Arch. II program, the portfolio should demonstrate the applicant’s ability to pursue advanced work in architectural design.

Portfolio:

• Many of our degrees require that you submit a portfolio, including for those applicants who do not have a previous architecture degree or background.
• The portfolio should include evidence of recent creative work: personal, academic and/or professional. Choose what you care about, what you think is representative of your best work, and what is expressive of you.
• Written material (articles or papers) may be included with the application, and are particularly appropriate for the PhD programs. Portfolio requirements vary by program.
• Be sure to review the portfolio requirements specific to the program to which you are applying. Applicants whose programs require portfolios should plan to upload an electronic version to the online application with the exception of the Master of Science in Art, Culture and Technology Program. ACT portfolios will be mailed on CD to the Architecture Department.

Please relate these intentions to your previous design and academic experience, and to your future goals, including the territory you wish to pursue in the program: Architecture & Urbanism, Architecture & Ecology, or Architecture & Discourse.
4. GRE Requirements: All applicants to graduate programs in architecture are required to take the GRE aptitude tests of the Educational Testing Service. As part of the application, all applicants are required to submit a portfolio which should represent the applicant’s best work and consist mainly of reproductions of 20 to 30 pieces of creative drawings, two-or-three dimensional work, and models.
  • If any portfolio project, drawing or model has been produced by several designers or if the design was produced in a professional setting, each drawing must be labeled, clearly stating the number of designers, which drawings were produced by the applicant, and a list of the names of all members of the group project. If the project was produced in an office, an office setting, or as an assistant to an author, then the office name, supervisor, and all members of the team must be identified.

3.       Statement of purpose: This one-page essay should explain your desire to study architecture, and in particular, why you wish to pursue an architectural education at SCI-Arc.

4.       Resume: All applicants are required to submit a resume or curriculum vitae. This document should list your education, any of your professional experiences, academic and artistic achievements, and/or published works.

5.       Letters of Recommendation: Applicants must submit three (3) letters of recommendation, which should attest to their academic achievements and/or creative abilities, or professional experience. At least two (2) letters of recommendation should come from past or current instructors. Applicants with extensive work experience may submit letters of recommendation from professional references. Each letter of recommendation must be accompanied by a completed letter of recommendation form (found HERE).

6.       Academic Transcripts: Official academic transcripts from all schools previously or currently attended are required, regardless of credits received or courses completed. These records should include coursework through the most recent term completed at each school. Applicants in the process of completing their degree will be required to submit a final official transcript that indicates the degree completed and the date it was received. Official transcripts should arrive in a sealed envelope directly from each school. Students who have acquired less than 60 credit hours/units as of the date of the deadline, must also submit an official high school transcript that shows they have received their high school diploma. Transcripts from schools located internationally must be officially evaluated and translated into English.

7.       GRE: Applicants to the M.Arch 1 or M.Arch 2 programs are required to submit official test scores from the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) General Test. All test scores should be received no later than the appropriate application deadline. For more information on the GRE, go to www.ets.org/gre. SCI-Arc’s GRE School Code is 2781.

8.       TOEFL/IELTS Test: All international students applying from non-English speaking countries are required to submit official test scores from either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The minimum score requirement is ninety (90) for the internet-based TOEFL, a five-hundred-and-eighty-three (583) for the paper-based TOEFL, or a six-point-five (6.5) band score for the IELTS. All test scores should be received no later than the appropriate application deadline. Students who have completed a minimum of two years of formal instruction at an institution where English is the primary language of instruction may be eligible to waive this requirement. Please contact the Admissions Office for detailed information regarding this process. Only test scores completed within the past two years will be accepted. Portfolio:

• All applicants are required to submit a portfolio of creative work. Portfolios should consist of a minimum of 15 pieces of creative work. Individuals who have no formal architectural education or experience should include work that demonstrates his/her visual design sensibilities, sense of form and space, experience with different materials or media, craftsmanship, and imagination. This work may include but is not limited to: drawings, sketches, photography, painting, sculpture, ceramics, or wood and metal work.
•  Applicants with a background in architecture are expected to present appropriately documented architectural projects in place of or in addition to other creative work.

You must retake the exam if your scores are more than 5 years old. Please note: Due to a system change at U.Va., if ETS sent your GRE scores to U. Portfolio:

• All Master of Architecture and/or Master of Landscape Architecture applicants are required to submit an electronic portfolio with the online application to each program.
• Additionally, the portfolio should provide an indication of your aptitude for thinking critically and creatively through design. This can come in many forms. Such items as photographs of executed artwork, pottery, sculpture, photographic essays, and weaving have been submitted in the past. In addition, we have received prose, poetry, published writings, and illustrated reports as evidence of an applicant’s interest and experience in dealing with design or aesthetic matters. With the new digital requirement, you can also embed links to online YouTube videos in your portfolio. All of these can be meaningful, and we encourage you to think freely about the manner in which they may meet this application requirement.
• Applicants to the Master of Architecture Path 1 program must submit a portfolio which illustrates the design and/or research issues they wish to pursue if admitted to program.
• For successful submission, the portfolio:

• Must be no more than 15 MB. Any portfolio over 15 MB will not be accepted by our online form.
• Must be a pdf file. We do not accept any other file types.
• The portfolios will be reviewed digitally (it will not be printed), therefore we suggest formatting your portfolio for view on a computer screen, and we suggest using a horizontal format in your design.
• Do not include photos of yourself or your Social Security Number in the electronic portfolio.

• Transcripts of academic records: You must submit records of all college-level courses you have taken by requesting official transcripts to be sent from each institution you have attended, including any community colleges. You will probably have to submit a fee for each transcript.
• GRE required: Applicants taking the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) must have their official scores reported to the UC Berkeley Graduate Division by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Only GRE scores taken after June 2009 are valid. There is no minimum score requirement.
• Statement of purpose: This is your academic statement. It should include a description of why you want to study your proposed subject field, why you want to study at UC Berkeley, and how our program can help you achieve your professional goals.
• Personal statement: The Personal History Statement should convey how a combination of life experiences, idealism, role models, education and work experiences have influenced your decision to apply. You may also include any educational, familial, cultural, economic or social experiences, challenges or opportunities relevant to your academic journey. Portfolio:

• The portfolio may contain up to 12 pages (8-1/2″x11″-format) of design content. Please note that beyond 12 pages, your portfolio may not be reviewed. Title page and/or table of contents may be submitted, and will not count toward the 12 pages of content. The digital portfolio should showcase recent, high-quality work, and will be judged on both content and overall design. Applicants without professional training may submit work that shows other evidence of creativity (studio art, construction/renovation, furniture design, etc.) and clearly demonstrates interest in the proposed subject field. Any material that is not entirely the applicant’s own work must be clearly identified.
• Portfolio must be saved as a single file in PDF format, and submitted via the UC Berkeley Graduate Division online application. The filesize must be no larger than 10MB. If your portfolio PDF file exceeds 10MB, try compressing it in Adobe Acrobat.
