3.Official College Transcripts

Submit one official transcript from each college you have attended. If transcripts are issued directly to you, forward them to SAIC with the seal unbroken and the registrar’s signature intact. If you are in the process of completing a bachelor’s degree when you apply, a transcript showing your first three years of study is acceptable. If admitted to SAIC, you must submit a final, official transcript verifying the completion and award of your degree directly to SAIC’s admissions office prior to your matriculation.

4.Statement of Purpose

Write a 500- to 700-word statement that describes your work or research. Discuss how you came to focus on the medium, body of work, or academic area you wish to pursue at the graduate level. Also discuss future directions or goals for your work, and describe how the Master of Fine Arts in Studio (Designed Objects) is particularly suited to your professional goals.

5.Letters of Recommendation

You are responsible for securing two letters of reference from persons who are qualified to write about your potential for success at SAIC. If you are currently a student or are a recent graduate, we recommend you request letters of recommendation from current or former instructors.
If your recommenders prefer they may submit recommendations by mail. Be sure to supply your recommenders with addressed, stamped envelopes and ask them to sign across the seal.

6.International students

Submit Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) results with your application. The Institution Code for SAIC is 1713.

Minimum Required Scores TOEFL: 85, IELTS: 6.5

7.Academic Records

Transcripts are records of your studies that list the courses you completed, the grades received, and provide evidence of degree conferral. They may include grade sheets, exam results, final diplomas, degrees, or graduation certificates. Official copies are issued in the original language directly by your university.

8.Interviews

Although no interview is required, applicants are welcome to contact the Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Designed Objects department to request an interview with the department chair at 312.629.6650 or aiado@saic.edu.

 

Portfolio:

ePortfolio

The Admissions Committee reviews portfolios for clear direction and potential for development. Applicants are required to submit an ePortfolio. You must submit a separate ePortfolio for each program or studio department to which you apply. Instructions for submitting ePortfolios will be sent either to the email address associated with your SAIC application, or to the email address associated with your ePortfolio account, if you already have one. You will receive the link to your ePortfolio 24 to 48 hours after you save the first page of the online application.

Your portfolio should include samples of your recent work:

• 15–20 still images OR
• 20 minutes of interactive or time-based work
• Optional support materials may include such items as performance notes and original scores and compositions.

Admissions:

1. Application Form Complete and submit RISD’s graduate application form. The application fee is $60. If you’re not able to use our online form, please contact the Admissions Office at admissions@risd.edu or 800 364 7473.
2. Academic Transcripts  You must provide official transcripts of all undergraduate and/or graduate study indicating satisfactory completion, or evidence of anticipated completion, of an undergraduate degree program from an accredited college or university. If you are attending a school in a non-English-speaking country, your academic credentials must be translated into English by an approved translator.
3. Statement of Purpose  Graduate applicants must submit a written statement (500–750 words) outlining their interest and goals in pursuing graduate study. Certain programs suggest more specific ideas or written requirements as outlined below.
4. Tests TOEFL or IELTS | All applicants who speak English as a second language, including US citizens, must submit results from either TOEFL or IELTS. Since proficiency in English is a prerequisite for acceptance, applicants must attain an acceptable score on either test; RISD requires a minimum result of 93 on the TOEFL or 6.5 on IELTS.  Graduate Record Exam (GRE) | Results from the Graduate Record Examination are not required, but MA, MAT and MLA candidates are encouraged to submit their scores.
5. 5.     Letters or Recommendation  Applicants are required to submit three letters of recommendation. Recommendation letters should be written by teachers or other professionals who have firsthand knowledge of your art or academic achievements and can comment on your potential for graduate study. Since SlideRoom (the portfolio submission site referenced above) allows for this, please invite people who are writing letters in support of your application to submit them through this service. If that’s not possible, please have your letters sent to our postal address (see below) or emailed to admissions@risd.edu.

Portfolio:

Graduate applicants are required to submit 10–20 examples of visual work, with certain programs suggesting more specific ideas or portfolio requirements (see below).

You must submit your portfolio through SlideRoom, an online portfolio service that charges a $10 fee.

7. Official Transcripts – Official transcripts from each college or university attended, regardless of whether or not a degree has been granted, are required as part of the application process. Official transcripts are to be sent directly to the Academy by the college or university. (caaadmissions@cranbrook.edu for electronic transcripts). Transcripts from foreign schools must be translated into English. Note: The Academy reserves the right to determine the validity of any degree submitted as a requirement of admission. The applicant must bear the cost if it is necessary to secure the services of an outside credentials evaluator.

8. International applicants: In addition to meeting the admission requirements, international students must demonstrate proficiency in the English language through the TOEFL test. For admission to the Academy, the minimum TOEFL score accepted is 85. Only test scores sent directly to the Academy by ETS will be accepted. The ETS code of Cranbrook for TOEFL reporting is 1156. International applicants who have or will receive a degree from an English speaking college or university are eligible to have the TOEFL requirement waived and will indicate this when prompted within the application

Applicants are required to attach 20 examples of recent work and provide title, date, materials, and dimension for each image/file uploaded. Instructions on acceptable file types will be provided during the upload process in Slideroom. Applicants to the 3D Design Department are required to follow these instructions. For those applicants applying from countries where the baccalaureate degree is not awarded for programs in the practice of art may be admitted to graduate study if the diploma or certificate received approximates the standards of the BFA, BA, or BS degrees, and if their academic records and portfolios indicate an ability to meet graduate standards.

1. You are encouraged to include works done in the medium of your intended major: ceramics, glass, metals or wood. However, a portfolio that is entirely two-dimensional is also acceptable. If you do not have a portfolio, but are interested in any of the Craft School programs, please contact the faculty directly to discuss alternative approaches to completing your application.
