• Online Common Application Form
• Application Fee – $75*
• Official Secondary School Transcript
• Senior Year Grade Report
• Standardized Test Scores, SAT or ACT, including writing section (Syracuse University does not require the SAT II subject tests)
• Secondary School Counselor Evaluation
• Two Academic Recommendations
• Portfolio or audition (applicants to the School of Architecture or College of Visual and Performing Arts programs in art and design, drama, or music)

*If you are eligible for an application fee waiver you will be able to indicate this on the Common Application.

Submitting your portfolio

Applicants may submit their portfolios either in person or online, but should only make one final submission.

FOR ONLINE SUBMISSION, PLEASE NOTE:  WHEN COMPLETING THE COMMON APPLICATION YOU WILL BE ASKED IF YOU “INTEND TO SUBMIT AN ART SUPPLEMENT.”  THIS ACTUALLY REFERS TO OUR REQUIRED PORTFOLIO.  IF YOU ANSWER YES YOU WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE REDIRECTED TO SLIDEROOM.  IF YOU INTEND TO HAVE YOUR FINAL PORTFOLIO REVIEW IN PERSON, DO NOT ANSWER YES OR SUBMIT AN ART SUPPLEMENT.

Portfolios may be submitted before or after your application but should meet all deadlines.

Portfolio Requirements

The portfolio should be a collection of 12-20 images of your most recent work

The collection should represent your interests, highlight your ideas and conceptual abilities, demonstrate your technical skills, your willingness to experiment, and your commitment to visual expression and communication.

You should select works which demonstrate the depth and breadth of your experiences.

The composition of the portfolio should be balanced to emphasize your strengths and should consist of a variety of media and approaches.  This may include examples related to your program of interest, for example, if you’re interested in the studio arts you may want to include painting, sculpture, printmaking, illustration, ceramics, metalsmithing, etc.  If your interest is in our design programs, you may want to include examples of design, typography, textiles, perspective, fashion drawings, product, and furniture.

It is strongly suggested that a minimum of 6 drawings from observation be included if you are applying to illustration, painting or printmaking.  Observational drawings can include still lifes, figure drawings, landscapes, etc.

You can include examples of assignment-based projects that are the product of instruction, but we also want to see work that reflects your individual ideas and direction outside of the classroom.

Please note: it is generally not possible to have an in-person review for art video or film.

1. In person

Try to bring actual work to an in-person portfolio review. Any work too large or too fragile to transport may be shown in person as photographs.

2. On campus

Portfolio review appointments for first-year students are available through the Office of Recruitment and Admissions Monday through Friday throughout the year. Please call 315-443-2769 to schedule an appointment.

3. Off campus

New York City: Select dates are available for first-year students.

National Portfolio Days (NPD): The School of Art and Design is represented at many of the National Portfolio Days, which are free and operate on a first-come, first-served basis. These dates are posted in our section on off-campus events when they are available. You may also call us at 315-443-2769 for more information about which NPD events we attend.

4. Online

Applicants must submit their final portfolios THROUGH THE COMMON APPLICATION or at suvpa.slideroom.com.  The Common Application and SlideRoom are integrated, so you will be asked to login with your Common Application login and password.  The online portal offers additional instruction for submitting work. Once your portfolio is submitted, it can be viewed and rearranged until the final submission. Be sure to submit your portfolio to the correct degree level (undergraduate) and program. For technical assistance, contact support@slideroom.com. There is a $10 fee for each portfolio submission you make through SlideRoom.

Please include one of the following writing samples* (300 words maximum):

Statement of Interest – why you are applying to this particular program of study

Artist/Designer Statement – a general introduction of your work as an artist or designer, why you chose particular subject matter, why you work in a certain medium, etc.

Identify one piece in your portfolio that you are most passionate about and tell us the story behind it

*If you are submitting your final portfolio in-person, you should bring a printed copy of your statement to the review appointment.
