In Fine Art courses, students will sharpen their skills in the usage of different materials, tools, and techniques to create visual arts and practice creative thinking and concept building while making extensive studio projects. 

Drawing

Students begin this class by practicing fundamental rendering techniques, then move on to developing strategies to combine diverse media, modes of representation, and elements of design to express individual content. Research and invention are encouraged. The curriculum culminates in the completion of a series of drawings that display formal and conceptual maturity.

Painting

Students begin this class by practicing fundamental painting techniques to describe the nature of light and form in the physical world, and then progress to express individual content. The curriculum culminates in the completion of a series of paintings that display formal and conceptual maturity.

Watercolor

A course in the use of watercolor to describe volume, light, and texture. Watercolor is also explored as a medium to be combined with drawing media. This is a foundation course.

Pencil Technique

This class is aimed towards students who have completed the Basic Drawing Foundation course or for students who have acquired the foundation skills of drawing. This class consists of seven classes for three hours each. Students will learn in detail the process of creating tone, volume, and texture using a pencil, which is a basic material for drawing. Each section is composed to experience from a simple drawing to that which requires more technique. Video tutorials, which are easy to follow, are provided for students who wish to further develop and improve their skills. This class is recommended for students who wish to prepare for an art portfolio or art competition after having completed Basic Drawing at Ashcan Studio of Art.

Color Pencil Technique

This class is aimed towards students who wish to improve their overall understanding of colored pencils and techniques. This class consists of seven classes for three hours each. It is intended for students who have completed the Basic Foundation courses at Ashcan Studio of Art and anticipate preparing for an art portfolio or art competition. From basic skills to intermediate and advanced techniques, this course is designed to provide ample experience in a short amount of time. Video tutorials, which are easy to follow, are provided for students who wish to further develop and improve their skills. This class is recommended for students who have completed Basic Drawing and have a basic understanding of pencils.

Portrait I – Drawing

Portrait I course covers comprehensive methods for developing a successful portrait. Students will gain a better understanding of a face proportion, head structure, and construction of each facial feature, and will learn how to utilize this knowledge to construct an accurate drawing. Students will also learn about the application of different lighting, angle, and perspective through demonstration, practice, and projects.

Portrait II – Painting

Portrait II course will guide students through the process of color portrait production. In this course, students will be introduced to how to mix colors for different shades of skin tones and build textures in portrait painting. Students will learn how to discover ways to represent a subject’s identity through content, color, and texture, by creating portrait paintings in different skin colors, facial structures, and styles.

Figure Drawing

Students will learn the basic foundation of human anatomy, proportion, and gesture drawing in different materials. Required for all portfolios regardless of the major.

Sculpture

Ashcan’s Portfolio Preparation program helps students develop a unique and coherent body of work that is essential to the pursuit of higher studies. Students get individualized attention from instructors to focus on personal projects and help them with creative thinking. They learn how to develop their ideas in three-dimensional media, and may at times create works that combine both two and three-dimensional pieces. The curriculum culminates in the completion of a series of sculptures that display formal and conceptual maturity.

Delve deeper into the field of visual design you are pursuing. Learn from the professionals in the field who will guide you through the process of architecture design, fashion design, and graphic design, using both traditional and digital tools.

Design courses are structured so that anyone can learn the basic principles of architecture design, fashion design, or graphic design without prior knowledge of the art. Graphic Design Basic

This class will provide an overview of the design communication process including conceptualization, creative processes, typography, and technology. This course introduces students to designing interior and exterior spaces, using conceptual approaches to design problems and solutions. Fashion Illustration Basic

The Fashion Design course begins with instructions on how to draw the standard fashion figure, which will be used as a base for a series of fashion sketches and illustrations. As students develop their drawing skills, they investigate historical and contemporary fashion and use it as a resource for their own fashion designs. Finally, using the fashion figure, students illustrate their own line of garments in detail, using pen, ink, marker, and wash techniques.

In this course, students will learn the basic knowledge of soldering, wiring, 3d modeling, and 3d printing, by assembling a customized Bluetooth speaker. This will help students gain fundamental skills and foundational experience in 3d product making. All materials and kits are provided. Recommended for 5th grade and up.

Digital Character Design & Animation with iPad Basic

The Character Design and Animation course will cover the key elements of character design using the Procreate app (Once-a-week Program) and can extend to applying the character in animation using the Adobe Animator program (Intensive Program). In this course, students will develop skills in creating a strong, compelling character with interesting shapes and personalities, through life observation, reference research, and imagination. Students will give life to their own character that is memorable and appealing, which they can later use for multiple forms of visual communications including animation, storybook, and more.

Digital Illustration-Storybook Making with iPad

Recommended for students who enjoy writing and reading stories, the Storybook Making course is designed to help students explore and develop their sense of visual communication and translation using their favorite story or story of their own. In this course, students are required to select an existing story or write a story of their own and recreate the verbal narratives into digital images using Procreate app. During the class, students will create character design and background settings, which will extend to a quality book cover or insert illustrations as a final project.
